Public Transportation
Montreal has a good public transportation system with a network of subways (called the Métro) and buses. The workshop site is between and very close to the Acadie and Outremont stations.
If arriving at the airport, transit passes are available for purchase near International Arrivals. We recommend purchasing the Weekly All Modes A pass which is valid on all services on the island including the 747 bus to access the airport from either Downtown or the Lionel-Groulx (pronounced Lee-o-nell Ge-ru) Métro station. (The 747 has a special single-trip fare of $11, so it's worth ensuring you have a pass that covers your entire trip.
Bicycling
Montreal has the world's first dispersed bike rental system concept, called BIXI, that covers almost all of the city. There is a Bixi station on the corner of Outremont and Thérèse-Lavoie-Roux in front of the meeting site with bike lanes on both streets.
Helmets are mandatory when renting an electric (blue) bike from Bixi. They are recommended, not required, for the motorless grey Bixi bikes.
The city has a vast network of protected bike lanes, although the meeting location is on a somewhat isolated segment of this network. Vélo Québec has a useful map showing the level of bicycle infrastructure available. The light-blue REV (Express Bike Network) provides the highest-quality lanes.
To access downtown, be mindful that there are limited crossing of the rail corridor extending south-east of campus until the REV St-Denis. If your destination is west of St-Denis, it is recommended to approach along Outremont instead of Thérèse-Lavoie-Roux, either from the Côte-St.-Catherine protected bike lane, or through local streets in Mile-End.
Cars and Taxis
Parking near the meeting site is extremely limited. Please advise Alan Robinson (alan.robinson@umontreal.ca) if you intend to drive to the meeting to obtain advice.
Taxis in Montréal are abundant and reasonably priced with taxi stands spread throughout the neighbourhoods. In the downtown and Outremont areas, the major taxi companies are Taxi Coop, Taxi Champlain, Taxi Atlas, and Diamond Taxi. Most companies can send a car quickly, but do not take reservations.
Uber Taxis are also available if you wish.
